ACCIONA has made a significant contribution to South Australian infrastructure projects over the past almost eight decades, including through legacy companies AW Baulderstone, Abigroup and Coleman Rail, and Lendlease Engineering.

Heading north from Port Augusta, In South Australia, motorists travel over the Joy Baluch Bridge.

The original bridge, known as the Great Western Bridge, was built in the 1920s and rebuilt and widened in the 1940s. The end of the bridge provides drivers with a fundamental decision: turn left for Perth or turn right for Darwin – both are approximately 2,500 kilometres away!

“The bridge is a great example of ACCIONA’s contribution to significant South Australian infrastructure projects over the past almost eight decades, including through legacy companies AW Baulderstone, Abigroup and Coleman Rail, with AW Baulderstone involved in the widening of the original iconic bridge,” said Sean Bonham, ACCIONA’s Executive General Manager of the South West region.

“It was also AW Baulderstone who delivered the innovative inlet structure design at West Lakes, ensuring a home for thousands of Adelaideans and improving the quality of water in the Port River for the resident dolphin population.”

Just like ACCIONA, South Australia has a long and proud history of forward-thinking.

In the 1890s, South Australians led the nation in granting women the right to vote in elections and run for office, and in the 1960s, South Australians led the nation on land rights.

“ACCIONA is proud to be part of South Australia’s leading thinking,” said Danny Parkinson, ACCIONA’s Regional Manager of South Australia.

For example, the Adelaide Desalination Plant, which we completed construction of in 2012 and continue to operate and maintain, ensures that the water supply is not disrupted during times of drought.”

ACCIONA has also played an important role in developing clean energy solutions for South Australia since the turn of the century.

In fact, Cathedral Rocks Wind Farm, near the southern tip of the Eyre Peninsula, was ACCIONA’s very first investment in Australia, and we continue to operate it today.

“We are currently looking at how we can progress our trials of green hydrogen in our South Australian-based projects,” said Danny.

In 2024, ACCIONA moved our South Australian offices to Lot Fourteen, a world-class innovation district dedicated to solving global challenges.

“It’s the perfect home for ACCIONA, as we dedicate ourselves to finding innovative ways to safely deliver breakthrough and landmark projects that will service the needs of the state’s residents with transport, water, sustainable energy and healthcare for past, current and future generations,” said Sean.

“We’re looking forward to many more years of building deep pipelines of local expertise and knowledge, mobilising our local workforce and shaping careers, and generating commercial opportunities for South Australian businesses.
